Developing a Responsible Way Forward
A NEW GLOBAL INITIATIVE FOR SUSTAINABLE RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
A VIEW OF AN OIL PALM PLANTATION AT SUNRISE
POTICO consists of a portfolio of revenue streams—sustainable palm oil, certified timber, carbon offsets—designed to divert planned oil palm plantations onto degraded lands and bring the forests that were slated for conversion into certified sustainable forest management.
Project POTICO aims to have 250,000-1,250,000 acres of degraded land converted into oil palm plantations and a corresponding amount of virgin forest protected from clear-cutting, conserved and/or sustainably managed according to Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) guidelines.
The strategy would relieve pressure on virgin forests, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve biodiversity, and enhance local livelihoods.
GOALS INCLUDE:
- Preservation of Indonesia's virgin tropical rainforests
- Conversion of degraded land into new sustainable certified oil palm plantations
- Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and loss of biodiversity from forest clearing
- Development of opportunities for local communities
- Improvement of sustainable and legal logging through adoption of certified forest management guidelines
- Increased viability of certified wood supply for use in wood and paper products
